Non-crimes and Punishment, The Card Check Story

Monday, August 31st, 2009 by admin

If there were some sort of little hobgoblin, tucked back in the hovels of the U.S. Capitol, whose sole task was to convince the public that the Employee Free Choice Act is a good idea, then that poor little guy would be having yet another terrible day.

Our friends at Shopfloor.org point us to this comment from incoming AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka:

Today, more than ever, we need to be a labor movement that stands by our friends, punishes its enemies, and challenges those who, well, can’t seem to decide which side they’re on.

The language is telling: “punish” the “enemies” — is the labor movement at war? Does being non-union make one a combatant or a criminal?

Of course, Mr. Trumka has said similar things before, and especially when focused on the Employee Free Choice Act.

All of which begs the question: If union officials will talk this openly about punishing people who disagree with them, why would we want to expose workers to intimidation by denying them a secret ballot vote when deciding whether to join a union?
